We work towards our vision for a world where first-generation migrants are fairly and proportionately represented across the public sector and where public sector workforces reflect the diversity and demographics of their communities.
Social Equity Centre aims to improve the representation of first-generation migrants across the UK public sector, starting with local government. We believe that public institutions are stronger, fairer and more effective when they reflect the communities they serve.
We equip first-generation migrants with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to access careers and leadership opportunities in the public sector. Alongside this, we conduct research, influence policy and work in partnership with public bodies to remove structural barriers and promote more inclusive workplaces.
Our work is built around the three key areas listed below.
Why this matters?
First-generation migrants remain significantly underrepresented across the public sector, particularly in decision-making roles. Many face barriers including limited knowledge of how public institutions operate, a lack of accessible pathways into public sector careers, and low confidence in navigating recruitment processes.
When public sector workforces do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, opportunities are missed. Representation strengthens public services, improves trust between institutions and communities, and helps ensure that policies are informed by a broader range of lived experiences.
At Social Equity Centre, we are working to change this. Through training, research and policy advocacy, we are helping to build a public sector that is more representative, equitable and better equipped to serve everyone.
We undertake pioneering research to better understand the barriers facing first-generation migrants and provide evidence that informs policy, practice and organisational change.
